There is so much information on the internet about women’s fashion that it can be easy for men to feel left out. There is no way I can make up for the lack of information, but I can add something to the pot.

One area I want to focus on “for men” is learning how to dress our bodies. What I’ve learned from listening to my wife talk about fashion is that just because something looks good on one person doesn’t mean it will look good on someone else.

There are many factors men should take into consideration when picking out clothes their clothes, but one of the main factors is the cut of the pants or jeans they wear.

We come in all shapes and sizes, so clothing is going to look different on us. Designers understand this and for that reason they make different cuts.

I remember when my mom would take my brother and I school shopping and one of the things that was fun for us was getting new jeans. As a child and even a teenager, I wondered why companies had so many versions of what appeared to be the same jeans.

Of course, I noticed little things like wide leg or skinny, but for the most part I thought jeans were jeans.

It wasn’t until I got older that I started learning about the different cuts and paying attention to how certain brands fit me.

If you’re a man that’s having a hard time finding jeans that fit properly, this article is for you.

For starters, our bodies are usually broken down into 3 different categories

  • Ectomorph – the slim guy that has a hard time putting on weight.
  • Mesomorph – the regular frame and/or muscular frame guy.
  • Endomorph – the large frame or big men.

Those are the technical terms but for the sake of this article, I’ll stick to more basic terms. As for the fit, jeans usually come in 5 basic fits.

  • Skinny
  • Slim
  • Regular
  • Relaxed
  • Loose

Skinny

Skinny jeans are what they are, you either like them or you don’t. Skinny jeans can be tough fit to shop for. This particular fit needs to be as close to perfect as possible. So, if you like to shop online, you need to know your measurements.

Most people tend to think that skinny jeans are just for young people, but today it’s not uncommon to see men of all ages wearing skinny jeans. Like I said earlier, make sure you know your measurements.

Having said that, skinny jeans are typically for a slender built man. The gentleman who is comfortable showing off the shape of his legs and willing to sacrifice comfort for a desired look.

What I love about fashion is that more men are experimenting with style and stepping out of their comfort zone. Rule #1 in fashion, wear what makes you feel good.

Slim

Slim jeans have become extremely popular amongst men of all ages because the baggy fit really isn’t in right now and most men aren’t comfortable wearing skinny jeans.

According to “fashion experts” slim jeans look best on men with slender/lean frames. In other words, people that have a really high metabolism and struggle to put on weight.

The reason they believe this is because Skinny Jeans will make you look even skinnier and loose jeans will look baggy, even when they’re the correct size.

Regular

Muscular men… men that are wide in the shoulders and slim in the waist (V-shaped), tend to look better in regular fit jeans.

Slim jeans tend to look too snug on muscular men and loose jeans make them look chunky. A Regular fit gives them their ideal look and usually fits their frame better.

Relaxed

Relaxed jeans are ideal for the man that’s a little wider in the midsection. Maybe they carry a little more weight around their waist, or their hips are a little wider.

Going with a more relaxed fit gives men with these dimensions a more unified look on the bottom half of their body.

Loose

Loose fit jeans are for the big men out there. If you’re a big man, you don’t want jeans that are constricting.

Loose fitting jeans give you room to move and be comfortable in your clothes. Slimmer cut jeans will cause you to look disproportioned and take away from your outfit.

Conclusion

These rules are not the end all be all to how men should wear jeans. Plenty of skinny guys love being slim and love the way skinny jeans look on them. So that’s the cut they prefer.

Muscular and regular size guys vary in their preferences. Since their body types fall in the middle of the spectrum, it makes since. Some of them may want to wear smaller or slimmer pants/jeans so they can show off their figures. Other may want to go more relaxed for comfort.

I’ve also seen some plus size guys wearing slimmer cuts recently. Many of them don’t buy into the notion that they should buy relaxed jeans simply because of their size. They choose fashion over comfort.

Remember rule #1, wear what makes you feel good. These are just some simple standards that “fashion experts” have put in place for what typically looks best on each body type.

I’d love to hear your take on fit and body types. What cut do you prefer, and do you follow the blueprint that has been laid out by the experts.
